The government plans to expand the programme of using head post offices as PSKs.
6 post offices have been identified for the pilot stage.
Muktesh Kumar Pardeshi, joint secretary Passport Seva Project and Chief Passport Officer said around 25-30 per centof the applicants who get an appointment do not turn up at the respective offices.
In the next 19 months, 68 new Passport Facilitation Centres will come up in various parts of the country and applicant can get the passport within three days of police verification.
The pilot project would cover entire Karnataka and parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, external affairs minister S M Krishna said while replying to a discussion on the working of his ministry. The project, when completed, would substantially improve the level of passport-related services offered to people, he said adding this was one of the largest e-governance initiatives undertaken by the government.
The e-passport will replace the existing passport document with a plastic card embedded with an electronic chip containing all the details.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has bagged -- from the Ministry of External Affairs -- the contract for delivering electronic passports (e-passports), according to sources. This deal is in addition to the second phase of implementing the Passport Seva Program, which the company got from the ministry. Players such as Thales India and HP participated in this deal, which is expected to be of Rs 1,000-1,200 crore.

Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran on Thursday said even though a "hybrid" model will be the new normal in future, India's largest software exporter TCS will ask employees to come to work once the pandemic is over as social interactions are a social necessity. "I do want to make the point that people need to meet people. It is a social necessity. "So, there will be a shift towards moving people to work when the pandemic gets over," Chandrasekaran, who also chairs TCS, said at the company's annual general meeting. At present, 97 per cent of the company's staff have been working from their homes because of the pandemic, he said, admitting that a "hybrid" model where people work from homes and also from offices will be the new normal.
